Wellness And Dentistry

There is an increasing realization of the correlation between looks and wellness. While it has been a truism for some time that ‘to look good, one has to feel good,’ it is only lately that there are medical researches to support such thought.

A number of beauty experts believe that our faces and body bear the marks of each struggle we face. And there are a number of studies in the aesthetic sciences where it is stated that even the smallest of stress anybody experiences would likely manifest itself in some form on the face.

The dental practice has taken these kinds of studies seriously. While there was a dependence before only on anesthetics for pain control during any dental procedure, dentists are now exploring new techniques to lessen pain for patients. It is not uncommon for dentists today to invest heavily in their offices, providing a soothing environment to patients while waiting for their turn at the dental chair.

In an area like Raleigh, North Carolina, where a good portion of the population is affluent, such services are the ones that are in great demand. Affluent patients often have access to information on what’s new and what’s hot in wellness and beauty and often communicate such demands to their dentists.

So nowadays, it is not uncommon for Raleigh dentists to offer wellness services before, during and after dental procedures. As mentioned before, one of the more common concessions are comfortable waiting rooms designed to soothe and calm anxious patients waiting for their scheduled procedures.

In such affluent areas, being the best dentist isn’t enough. Dental practice today isn’t what it used to be when patients got in and out of the dental chair. Patients today are looking for a wellness experience in any activity that concerns taking care of the body. For dentists, Raleigh, NC is a demanding market.

Raleigh dentists are now relying on other services such as massages to augment the wellness experience sought after by their patients in their dental clinics. Others have even resorted to esoteric pain management techniques such as hypnotism to provide an alternative means of sedation to anxious patients.

Look Fabulous – Eat Well, Sleep Well

What’s the secret of looking fabulous? Is there a secret? Well, there’s no secret and no mystery either, but there are things that you can do to tip the balance in your favor.

Look Fabulous – Eat Well, Sleep Well

Do you get enough sleep? Ideally you should get between 7 and 8 hours’ sleep every night. How many did you get last night? What do you think your average is over the past week? You might be surprised when you work it out.

Did you know that the average number of hours sleep we get every night is less than it was 50 years ago? 50 years ago everybody got 2 hours’ more sleep. Why has this happened? Probably because we stay up too late watching television. Maybe the demands of our everyday jobs are much greater than they used to be.

The problem with getting too little sleep is that your body interprets a lack of sleep as an energy deficiency – which it is.

It responds by releasing a hormone called ghrelin which makes you feel hungry. When you come down to breakfast the one thing you want to do is to eat some calorie-dense food – preferably sweet – to assuage your hunger. You make a move for the sugar -coated breakfast cereal and down a large volume of calories. Do this every day and your chances of looking fabulous will soon evaporate as the pounds roll on.

What’s your diet like? Do you eat a lot of ready meals? How much fresh food do you eat? To look fabulous you have to take care of the most important thing in your life – you. If you don’t fill yourself with the right fuel, you won’t get very far and you won’t look very good. The space shuttle doesn’t run on diesel. It has to have the right fuel to do the job, and so do you!

Looking fabulous is about making what you eat fabulous.

Fabulous fruit and fabulous vegetables can make all the difference to the way you look and to what you weigh. All it takes to look fabulous is a little care and effort.

If you’re TIRED of going on diets and having the weight come back again…or if you’re looking for something that would help you lose weight and make a REAL AND LASTING DIFFERENCE to your life…

Eat Well, Live Well With Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious disorder of insulin and glucose metabolism, and requires many dietary restrictions to stay healthy, active, and live a long life.

With the help of homecare medical equipment to help monitor glucose levels, diabetic patients can restore some normalcy to their dietary lives.

Eating foods rich in lean protein, such as broiled chicken or fish fillets are nutritious and delicious dinner choices. Portion control is absolutely essential in control of diabetes. Get used to weighing food at first, then you will be able to gauge on sight alone what a proper protein or complex carbohydrate portion looks like. Complex carbohydrates include brown rice, quinoa, whole grain breads and cereals and beans. Be sure to check the cereals and breads for added sugars. Dextrose, fructose and high fructose corn syrup are all sugars. Avoid products that contain these ingredients.

Diabetic patients are given diet choices and restrictions by their physicians or physician’s assistants. They will be glad to answer any questions on diet, especially with newly diagnosed patients. A diagnosis of diabetes is not to be taken lightly, and the informed patient is a good patient who wants to take control of their illness, and live a healthy long life.

Diabetes patients who do not care with their diets can suffer irreversible organ damage, obesity, have excess fat in the blood, and put themselves at very high risk for heart attacks, strokes and kidney disease. When treated correctly and early, these symptoms can be lessened or avoided.

Diabetics, unfortunately, need to test their blood glucose levels daily. Deliverable home healthcare supplies make this task easy. Along with homecare medical equipment delivered directly to the patient’s home for glucose monitoring, diabetics can monitor their glucose easily and as painlessly as possible.

Many diabetics may have to alter their diets drastically than what they were used to eating. While they may be able to indulge in those foods on occasion, foods with added sugar need to be avoided. Getting used to eating fruit and no sugar added treats is an adjustment, but can be done. In fact, it must be done. Many supermarkets have expanded the types of foods they carry to include sections of sugar free foods for diabetics. Many of them are quite tasty and seem to be very indulgent without eating restricted foods. Check with local stores to find out where they can be purchased.

With homecare medical equipment, checking glucose at home is easy and fast. Patients will know right away if their glucose is off, and they can correct it immediately.

Aging Well

“Age is a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it don’t matter.” -Satchel Paige

Once we reach a certain age, this aphorism becomes common currency. People begin to see it on birthday cards, in advertisements, in the inspirational books they find themselves reading. We might wonder why it is necessary to be reminded so often of this truism, until we find our bodies and minds beginning to shift. No matter how much we might enjoy life, it is hard not to mind when it feels like we are losing the bodies and minds we are used to living with.

Anyone who has fought and beaten a chronic illness in their youth can attest to the fact that health does not maintain itself. Former diabetics and even cancer patients often become fanatical purists in their diet and exercise regime. People like these have a hard-won claim on their wellness, and refuse to let nonchalance take it away again.

The truth is that everyone, every day, is met with challenges to their health. Aging is merely a certain set of challenges. If you don’t know how to meet these challenges, the body and the mind will degenerate.

Fortunately, today’s medical world offers a wide variety of advice and ways to understand the care of our bodies. With the wide variety of information, there is simply no reason to resign ourselves to a sub-par level of life on account of “aging.”

The most important factor, from any medical viewpoint, in lively aging is exercise. Be assured that this does not mean daily trips to the gym for hours-long workouts, which are prohibitive for those with debilitating conditions. Exercise is simply a function of moving and oxygenating your blood; if you’re breathing, you can get your blood moving.

The body is nourished by means of the blood, which carries nutrients to the tissues and gets rid of waste. When the blood flow gets stagnant, through a sedentary lifestyle or through a depressed state of mind, the industrious turnover of in with the good, out with the bad slows down, and the body languishes. You can see this in people at any age, whose life is lived without much physical or mental exertion. They may not be dramatically overweight or depressed, but their skin will look sallow, their hair and nails are dull, their movements are sluggish, and their eyes lack sparkle.

Eastern systems of medicine remind us that health is an interaction between mind, body and spirit. That means that the emotional, mental and physical aspects of our lives work together for a complete enjoyment of life.

The challenges that come with age, often become excuses for dropping out of life’s favorite activities. A person whose memory begins to degenerate can be tempted to hide from responsibility and relationships, out of fear that they will forget some vital information and make an embarrassing mistake. Someone whose face begins to show wrinkles might be ashamed of their appearance and resort to drastic measures like plastic surgery, or avoid their friends altogether.

Disengagement from life’s daily activities, however, is entirely counterproductive to aging well. Rather than skirt challenges, it’s possible to meet them with solutions that are sustainable and easy to incorporate into daily life.

There are brain-building activities that stimulate the memory centers of the brain to grow strong, as well as natural supplements, such as ginkgo and St. John’s wort, that provide valuable nutrition to the brain’s tissues and don’t cause the dramatic side effects of prescription medication. Facial exercise systems, such as Facercise, build the muscles of the face the same way that body-building strengthens the rest of the physique, providing lift to sagging skin and smoothing out wrinkles with a natural buildup of facial tissue. Practices like these are manageable goals that can start in your own home and, in a short while, renew your confidence for engagement with the pleasures of daily life.

Just as physical and mental well-being nourish our confidence to connect with others, emotional health ignites the health of the body and the mind. A new interest or passion is a powerful tool for getting our blood moving and our mind snapping. In Ayurvedic medicine, the life force is known as prana, while in traditional Chinese medicine it is called qi. In the language of Western medicine, this life force translates as well-oxygenated blood flowing freely throughout the body, tokened by a feeling of high spirits or exhilaration. The concept is clear in how the best techniques for one aspect of health improve the other two. People who take a dance class in interest of better fitness often find themselves making new friends. Those who volunteer their time in the service of others are likely to remember the names and stories of the people they are caring for.

Youth is not a time of life that is free from challenges–it simply involves a different set of challenges than those that come after a certain age. When aging is used an excuse for silly mistakes or embarrassments, it can too easily become an excuse for giving up on life. By meeting new challenges with grace, determination and patience, we can experience aging as simply a continuation of life’s journey.

Hearing Well

At some point in our life, we might encounter changes in our ability to hear and if this happens, it is a simple process to undergo an examination for hearing. If you are experiencing problems when it comes to your hearing, do not hesitate to consult with an audiologist as he or she will help you find out what is wrong after administering several sound tests. Taking our ears into consideration, they have a sensitivity to sound that can be measured by an audiologist with an audiometer.

Checking to see how well your ears can hear sounds in different frequencies is this test that makes use of an audiometer but aside from this there are two other types of hearing exams that you can choose from. It is the Weber test that is the second alternative. In this case, you can also use the Rinne test.

Because it is a primary tool when it comes to hearing exams, you should know about the audiometer. Here, you will be placed in a soundproof booth and then sound tests will be performed. Here, the person being evaluated will be required to wear a set of headphones that is connected to the main audiometer mechanism by the audiologist and then a series of sound tests in different frequencies will be administered and here is when the person being evaluated will be asked if he or she can hear anything and if sounds are still audible the examiner will ask the person to repeat what can be heard.

A basic hearing test is what you have here. When it comes to the Weber hearing exam, this is named after Ernst Heinrich Weber and the process involves the use of a vibrating tuning fork which is placed in different areas of the face. Equidistant to the ears, areas like the chin or the middle of the forehead come into contact with the fork being used.

Basically, you are seeing if the person can hear the sound coming from the vibration of the tuning fork in both ears and this is how the test goes. Usually, people hear a louder sound in an ear and a softer one in another. With regard to this test, it is effective in detecting unilateral hearing conditions.

The name behind the Rinne test belonged to an otologist from Germany named Heinrich Adolf Rinne. This is a more scientific test compared to the one by Weber as it compares a person?s perception of sounds. You are dealing with the transmission of sound through the air or by bone conduction through the mastoid.

Considering how it makes a sound of a higher frequency, the Weber and Rinne tests use a vibrating tuning fork. What happens here is that the tuning fork is placed on the mastoid process until the sound disappears. Expect to have the tuning fork placed outside the ear by the examiner afterwards.

Certain sounds can still be heard if a person does not have a hearing problem. A hearing problem will usually mean having nothing to hear. This is the way by which the Rinne test detects problems with hearing.

In this case, speech evaluations will normally come with hearing tests. When the audiologist conducts a hearing test, chances are the person being evaluated will be asked to repeat the sounds he or she hears when a sound test is run in different frequencies. When it comes to hearing well, it is important that you distinguish words too.

You can use the results from a test for hearing to see if you need to see a doctor or not. Sometimes, treatments done can reverse the loss of hearing. In some cases, hearing loss may become permanent.

Your Wellness

Wellness is a concept which has been around since the 50′s and is linked to Dr  H.L Dunn (1896-1975). It has been defined as “an integrated method of functioning which is oriented toward maximizing the potential of which the individual is capable. It requires that the individual maintain a continuum of balance and purposeful direction within the environment where he is functioning.”The concept was not popular then, not until the 70′s and has been associated with alternative medicine. Generally wellness has been used to describe the healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit triad; a state that combines health and happiness. It can be viewed as the way in which we balance and cater for our mental/emotional, physical and spiritual health state and how we make choices daily to attend to our wellbeing.  Approaches to wellness do vary and usually depends on who is using it or talking about it; I suppose the most important aspect is to promote the generally wellbeing of individual/s where they subsequently live a healthier and happier life.

However for some of us our emotional and mental wellness may be determined by our physical state where we may struggle especially if challenged by either body abnormalities, genetic problems or  illness. The beauty here is that for those affected by ailments beyond their control, skills as well as psychological tools can be utilized to help maximise the potential to live and get the best out of life.

Research have indicated that people who have a happy and optimistic disposition and laugh more in their day to day life , live far happier and have a longer life span.

Moreover, Research has also studied how positive attitude coupled with spiritual practices such as regular church attendance promotes health, wellness and healing.

The road to wellness and happiness can be paved by the small decisions we make daily toward our health.

“Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh! Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is” By M.A Radmacher. Good luck…… and God bless you all…
