Studies in Leeds this week have shown that over sixty percent of disabled badges in use are being misused, or used illegally. In Edinburgh, council officials feel the problem is even worse, with over seventy percent being used in the wrong way. The scams include able bodied people using their disabled relatives badges to obtain better parking spaces, or keeping the badge after a disabled relative has died. Other tactics include photocopying the badge in question, or using stolen or forged badges.

Across the country there are two and a half million badges in use, which points to over a million of them being used fraudulently. Ministers are planning to launch a major crackdown to name and shame the fraudsters and return some of the badges, and spaces that are convenient, to genuinely disabled people.

Blue badges allow disabled people to park for free, to park on double and single yellow lines without fear of fines, and to avoid congestion charges.

The abuse of these can leave genuinely disabled people struggling for places to park, and making their daily life a lot harder.

The government is planning on introducing a medical so that applicants for blue disabled badges will have to provide proof of their disability, therefore eliminating the amount of outrageous fraudsters who are claiming unfair disabled rights.
